1920 Democratic presidential candidate James Cox and his running mate, Franklin Roosevelt

James Cox and 37-year-old then-Assistant Secretary of the Navy Roosevelt, faced Republican Senator Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Fellow Ohioan Harding won in a landslide.

Cox was a former Congressman and two-time Ohio Governor. In his 1943 book, They Also Ran, Irving Stone wrote that Cox was “one of the clearest cases in all American history of the best man having been defeated.”

Here’s something I never noticed before (well, before seeing it pointed out on Cox’s Wiki page just now): Of the four men seeking the White House that year (Cox, Roosevelt, Harding, Coolidge), only Cox never became president.

In 1910, FDR was elected to the New York State Senate. After supporting Woodrow Wilson’s candidacy at the Democratic National Convention in 1912, Wilson appointed him Assistant Secretary of the Navy in 1913. By 1920, at age 38, he was a vice presidential nominee alongside Ohio’s James Cox.

In the iconic photo of Franklin D. Roosevelt signing the Social Security Act of 1935, the dignitaries crowded around the president stare intently at the legislation on his desk.  Only one looks directly into the camera. She is the woman without whom we likely would not have Social Security today: Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins – alone in a sea of men, wearing a slim black dress with white buttons and a fashionable tricorn hat.  Like other pioneering women from the first half of the 20th century, Perkins deserves to be honored before Women’s History Month 2019 ends.

If FDR was the father of Social Security, the first-ever female Labor Secretary was the mother. Perkins coaxed, cajoled, and practically willed the program into being, undaunted by formidable obstacles (including the question of its very constitutionality).  When Christopher Breiseth, former CEO of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute, asked Perkins to identify her proudest achievement toward the end of her life, she said without hesitation in her clipped and carefully cultivated Boston Brahmin accent: “Two words:  Social Security.”

The books housed at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum were apart of FDR’s personal library of over 22,000 volumes. He personally selected the volumes to be stored here.

FDR collected works of literature, history, economics, politics, and biography, as well as miniature books, children’s books, and mystery novels. He had a particular interest in books about his native Dutchess County and the American sailing navy. A knowledgeable collector in these areas, he searched catalogs and book seller inventories for titles to add to his library. Many were also given to him as gifts. It was his custom to sign and date the inside of his books when he acquired them, and he even designed a special book plate for his Naval Collection.
