Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) gained a leadership position in the Senate Democratic caucus Thursday, giving the prominent progressive senator a key role in shaping the party’s policy priorities.

Senate Democrats will be holding their leadership elections Thursday morning. A source saw Warren coming out of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) office Wednesday.
Major kudos to Elizabeth Warren for being the first candidate to mention Social Security on the 2020 Democratic primary debate stage. The moderators of last night’s CNN/New York Times debate failed to ask a single question about Social Security, but Senator Warren raised the issue in response to the topic of Universal Basic Income.
“I understand that what we’re all looking for is how we strengthen America’s middle class. And actually, I think the thing closest to the universal basic income is Social Security. It’s one of the reasons that I’ve put forward a plan to extend the solvency of Social Security by decades and add $200 to the payment of every person who receives Social Security right now and every person who receives disability insurance right now.”
The Massachusetts Senator told George Stephanopoulos that she left the GOP after the party dedicated itself to tilting the playing field in favor of Wall Street.
With less savings and weaker private retirement protection, retirees depend more than ever on the safety and reliability of Social Security.
Elizabeth Warren would like to send every senior citizen and disabled veteran in America a check for $580.

I love any proposal that puts my preferences clearly in the center. And Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts senator and presidential candidate, did just that with her plans for Social Security.
Just to remind you about Social Security’s finances, the program’s actuaries project a deficit over the next 75 years of 2.78% of taxable payrolls. As shown in the figure below, this deficit reflects the combination of rising costs and constant levels of income. The increasing costs are the result of a slow-growing labor force and the retirement of baby boomers, which raises the ratio of retirees to workers. Social Security’s deficit can be eliminated either by bringing up the income rate or lowering the cost rate in the figure below.
