Nearly one-quarter of America’s adult caregivers are between 18 and 34, part of a rising generation expected to shoulder more responsibilities as their parents and grandparents age.

Seniors 65 and older spend more than twice as much on health care, and those 75 and older spend nearly three times more than younger consumers. Not only do health care expenditures steadily increase with age but health care costs consistently rise much faster than general inflation.
The Fahle and McGarry study confirms some rather grim statistics from other sources about working women who are caregivers:
- The average income lost by caregivers each year is a whopping 33 percent.
- Caregivers pay for many caregiving expenses out of their own pockets, to the tune of $10,000 a year.
- Overall, 11 percent of caregivers end up having to quit their job to care for someone at home around-the-clock.
- If a woman does have to leave her job due to caregiving needs, the lost wages, pensions and Social Security benefits over her lifetime total more than $300,000.

For millions of American women, unpaid caregiving becomes a financial emergency, and on average accounts for $324,000 in lost wages and Social Security benefits in a caregiver’s lifetime.
Lowey’s proposal has been endorsed by 19 national organizations, including the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, the National Organization for Women (NOW), and the National Alliance for Caregiving. (A full list is at the bottom of this release.)

November is National Caregiver Month. Caregiving is especially important to women because they disproportionately provide and receive caregiving. It is estimated that 60 percent of all caregivers are women and 65 percent of all care recipients are women.
