#activism #politics #volunteers #p2 #progressive caucusApril 15th was the last day Congress had to pass a joint budget resolution. This failure to pass a budget transcends the halls of Congress and the Washington echo chamber because a budget is a statement of our values. It is a blueprint of our priorities for the American people. With Congressional Republicans incapable of moving forward on the most essential legislative priorities, why should the American people entrust their party with even more power this November?

Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and the Congressional Task Force on Seniors have led the charge against this proposal:
“10,000 people a day turn 65. We should be investing and expanding Medicare not stealing from it. People have paid into this program and expect it to be there…not to use that to fund anytime we need money to pay for another program…Medicare is not the ATM for everything Congress wants to pay for. Cutting this social insurance program isn’t the direction we should be going in. Medicare should not be the pay-for for trade deal. The best way to help workers is to stop trade deals that take their jobs…not cut Medicare to fund fixes.” Rep. Jan Shakowsky (D-IL)
TAA failed in the House.
Activists at the U.S. Capitol protesting proposed cuts in Social Security benefits known as the “chained CPI.” The proposal would reduce the cost-of-living adjustment seniors receive. Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus spoke in opposition to the proposal, which surfaces as Washington elected officials look for a “grand bargain” that could end the government shutdown standoff.

This year’s 1.3% #SocialSecurity cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is not enough to meet seniors’ rising living costs. Older Americans need a fairer inflation formula now! https://www.ncpssm.org/campaigns/boost-social-security-now/
