The 2,028-foot rectangular pool, which reflects the Lincoln Memorial at one end and the Washington Monument at the other, is among the most iconic landmarks in Washington, D.C.

A pivotal moment in American history, the August 28, 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom brought together Civil Rights leaders and supporters in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial to push for change. The culmination of the historic day was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech. Speaking to a crowd of over 250,000 on the National Mall and millions watching on TV, Dr. King expressed his hope that one day “we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.” Photo of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial by National Park Service.

The Lincoln Memorial is an American national monument built to honor the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln. It is located on the western end of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., across from the Washington Monument. The architect was Henry Bacon; the designer of the primary statue – Abraham Lincoln, 1920 – was Daniel Chester French; the Lincoln statue was carved by the Piccirilli Brothers; and the painter of the interior murals was Jules Guerin. Dedicated in 1922, it is one of several monuments built to honor an American president. It has always been a major tourist attraction and since the 1930s has been a symbolic center focused on race relations.

How can you not like vintage photographs like this? Especially when they represent a monumental moment in history.
Meanwhile, you could do more to erase Social Security’s shortfall by simply lifting the payroll tax cap. A lot more. According to the Congressional Budget Office, raising the federal retirement age to 70 would solve about half of Social Security funding problem, while lifting the payroll tax cap would solve all of it.
Equal Times is focusing on an article published by the Washington Post that Lori Montgomery wrote. Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid are three separate programs with unique funding, a fact that she fails to mention.
Activists at the U.S. Capitol protesting proposed cuts in Social Security benefits known as the “chained CPI.” The proposal would reduce the cost-of-living adjustment seniors receive. Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus spoke in opposition to the proposal, which surfaces as Washington elected officials look for a “grand bargain” that could end the government shutdown standoff.
