These benefit cuts to Social Security and Medicare will hurt seniors, veterans, and the disabled. This is something that Americans cannot afford.
The latest Bowles-Simpson plan to tackle the nation’s debt offers nothing more than a repackaged proposal to cut to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid through measures such as the chained CPI, means testing Medicare and raising the eligibility age. Yet, America’s seniors, the disabled, veterans and their families have already rejected these proposals through hundreds of thousands of petitions, letters and phone calls to Congress and the White House.
Governor Christie’s big plan for Social Security, Medicare & Medicaid? Cut Benefits, Cut Benefits, Cut Benefits!
More here.
There are few policies as popular with politicians, but unpopular with voters, as raising Social Security’s retirement age. It’s a perennial feature of bipartisan budget negotiations — the Simpson-Bowles report proposed it, for instance — and both Jeb Bush and Chris Christie have endorsed it. If establishment Washington has a platform, raising the Social Security retirement age is squarely at its core.

The Washington Post gave Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson another opportunity to push their case for deficit reduction, which includes plans for cutting Social Security and raising the age of eligibility for Medicare. The Post does not mention Mr. Bowles affiliation with Morgan Stanley. This could have something to do with his persistent refusal to ever include a Wall Street speculation tax in his deficit reduction plans.

They just don’t get it.
As Trump has caused controversy after controversy, Christie has become one of his strongest defenders. When the real estate mogul launched a series of racist attacks against a federal judge, Christie immediately intervened by arguing that Trump was not racist.

However, some conservatives in Congress insist that relief for programs like the Older Americans Act be paid for by cutting Medicare and Medicaid. This budgetary sleight-of-hand could trade partial relief for some seniors’ programs by cutting other essential health security programs like Medicare and Medicaid, thus further eroding the tenuous economic situation many older Americans face.

The National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare’s Max Richtman emphasized the importance of talking about improving and expanding Medicare and Social Security, not just protecting them. He described how he talks to seniors across the country who are shocked that Medicare doesn’t cover, hearing, or vision care. Only by highlighting these gaps in coverage can we work to change them.

Seniors went to Capitol Hill earlier this month to tell Congress why their current #SocialSecurity benefits are inadequate. Boost Social Security Now! https://www.ncpssm.org/campaigns/boost-social-security-now/ @RepJohnLarson
