The Beltway consensus, unduly shaped by deficit hawks and Wall Streeters, has been that the system is broken and must be pared back, and progressives who support Social Security have often had to play defense.

We know Social Security works and that it is a lifeline for seniors.
But what we have to remember is that right now when we are in the middle of a retirement crisis, the last thing we should be talking about is cutting Social Security. Right now, two out of three seniors rely on Social Security to keep a roof over their head and groceries on the table. For fourteen million seniors, Social Security is all that stands between them and poverty. We cannot cut the Social Security system.
“America made a promise to Social Security beneficiaries. America must honor its promise and that means no cuts to the Social Security Administration. We must make sure that seniors, the disabled, and survivors of beneficiaries receive the benefits they are entitled to.”
- Senator Elizabeth Warren

Any conversation about tackling poverty in the United States should include protecting and expanding Social Security. The reason is pretty straightforward: Social Security is the most powerful tool available to lift people out of poverty. Nearly two-thirds of seniors depend on Social Security for the majority of their income, and millions more children and adults depend upon survivors and disability benefits.
