The experts on the panel explained how Social Security benefits have changed for the LGBT community since the Windsor decision, and how seniors can potentially maximize their benefits.
Today, in a status conference with Lambda Legal in federal court in Chicago, the Department of Justice announced that the Social Security Administration ( SSA ) will apply the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent landmark marriage ruling retroactively and process pending spousal benefits claims for same-sex couples who lived in states that did not previously recognize their marriages.

Congress Member Mike Honda opened the LGBT Town Hall in San Jose with a thanks to the LGBT community for its grassroots work over the years that created a better world in which his Trans granddaughter will grow up. He pledged to continue his work in Congress to make sure all same-sex couples have access to Social Security as we do in California.

Asked Monday if the Trump administration would address “entitlement reform,” White House chief economic advisor Larry Kudlow said it will “probably” look at “larger entitlements” next year. Entitlement reform generally refers to changes or cuts to large government social programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid or food stamps.

For the first time in its long history, the Social Security Administration is providing benefits to same sex married couples, thanks to the Supreme Court’s June 2013 Windsor ruling in the Defense of Marriage Act. This is a significant development with important financial implications for millions of elder lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans, same sex spouses, widows, and children of LGBT parents.
Launched in Fall 2013 in the San Francisco Bay area, “Know Your Rights” is a national education campaign for LGBT Americans impacted by the Windsor decision. The Foundation of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare events are funded in part by the Archstone Foundation to help support a series of “Know Your Rights” town halls in Los Angeles March 18-20. The town halls will include panel discussions with the Social Security Administration, legal experts, and seniors’ and LGBT advocates. Community partners include the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, the Latino Equity Alliance, The Center-Long Beach and API Equality-LA with co-sponsorship by the Los Angeles City and County Departments of Aging.
Some in Washington talk about a need for “entitlement reform.” That translates to possible cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid — or all three. One crucial element should not be missed: These safety net programs work in tandem. Changes to one affect another. Just-released data show this is particularly true for older Americans, whose financial and health security depend on these programs working in concert.
A new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation lays bare this interdependence. Nearly three-quarters of retirees see little to no annual increase in their Social Security income after they pay their Medicare hospital and drug premiums.
