Cherry blossoms continue! 🌸 Framed by these delicate flowers, the Jefferson Memorial casts a picturesque reflection on the water of the Tidal Basin. Dedicated in 1943 by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the architecture of this marble memorial is on full display with its many columns and domed roof. While appreciating the various views, be prepared for crowds and please do not damage these gifts of goodwill. Photo at the National Mall and Memorial Parks courtesy of Jarrett Hendrix.
Anyone coming to DC to see the Cherry Blossoms?
The cherry blossoms at the Tidal Basin in D.C. are still just shy of their peak. A cooler spring has kept them from reaching full bloom, which will happen this week.

A towering engineering marvel and a powerful tribute to our first President, the Washington Monument rises 555 feet above the National Mall in Washington, DC. After being closed for more than three years for elevator and security upgrades, the Monument reopened to the public today. Visitors with tickets can again ride to the 500-foot observation deck, enjoy tremendous views of our nation’s capital, and learn more about the life and legacy of George Washington. Good morning!
Activists at the U.S. Capitol protesting proposed cuts in Social Security benefits known as the “chained CPI.” The proposal would reduce the cost-of-living adjustment seniors receive. Members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus spoke in opposition to the proposal, which surfaces as Washington elected officials look for a “grand bargain” that could end the government shutdown standoff.

March 27, 1912: The First Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees Are Planted in the U.S.
On this day in 1912, the first two Japanese cherry blossom trees were successfully planted by First Lady Helen Taft and Viscountess Chinda on the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. Japanese Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo gave the U.S. over 3,000 trees to demonstrate the growing relationship between the U.S. and Japan.
Every spring, Washington D.C. commemorates the initial planting through the National Cherry Blossom Festival. This year, the peak bloom is forecast for April 8-12.
As you wait for this year’s blooming period, treat yourself to this delicious spring recipe, a Raspberry, Pistachio, and Vanilla Semifreddo from PBS Food.
