He [President FDR] believed (and we still believe) that Social Security is basic to the lives of the American people. And he was very clear that it was a family program. It was created not only so that people, when they reach retirement age, have enough money for the basics of a decent life. It’s also so that their children don’t have to spend down their money to take care of them.
Congress should be expanding Social Security benefits for seniors.

“The enemies of Social Security in Congress are making a very bad situation even worse [by proposing cuts to SSA’s operating budget.] They want to make it impossible to effectively administer the program, and ultimately want to destroy Social Security.”
-Senator Bernie Sanders
President Franklin Delano Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act on August 14, 1935. He returned to Washington on that same day 80 years later to talk to Americans at the U.S. Capitol about his landmark legislation and to celebrate Social Security’s many successes.

Seniors went to Capitol Hill earlier this month to tell Congress why their current #SocialSecurity benefits are inadequate. Boost Social Security Now! https://www.ncpssm.org/campaigns/boost-social-security-now/ @RepJohnLarson
