Lowey Introduces Legislation to Provide Social Security Earnings Credit to Caregivers

An individual’s secure retirement is jeopardized when leaving the labor force or reducing hours to care for a loved one. The Social Security Caregiver Credit Act aims to increase retirement payments for caregivers who care for others during their working years.

For millions of American women, unpaid caregiving becomes a financial emergency, and on average accounts for $324,000 in lost wages and Social Security benefits in a caregiver’s lifetime.
Lowey’s proposal has been endorsed by 19 national organizations, including the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, the National Organization for Women (NOW), and the National Alliance for Caregiving. (A full list is at the bottom of this release.)

Max discussed the importance of boosting Social Security benefits for women and all retirees. Max also discussed his work to insert language into the Democratic platform seeking improvements in Social Security and Medicare benefits for seniors.

That’s because increases in Medicare Part B and Part D insurance premiums will negate all of the Social Security 2% cost of living increase for many recipients. Instead of staying even, we’ll fall behind.
I just got my annual benefits letter from Social Security. It says I will get $24 a month more next year. However, after the Medicare premium increases, my new Social Security check will be $3.40 a month less than the one I currently get. (The government deducts Medicare premiums from Social Security checks.)

If history is a guide, retirees should not trust Romney with their Social Security benefits. During his 2012 presidential campaign, Romney and his running mate, Paul Ryan, advocated raising the retirement age (which is a benefit cut), lower cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), and the creation of private Social Security accounts. The senator is clearly in the “entitlement reform” camp that purports to want to “save” Social Security by cutting it, implying that benefit reductions for seniors living on fixed incomes are somehow inevitable.
