On Tuesday, April 19, 2016 the Older Americans Act (OAA) was reauthorized for three years – an important bipartisan accomplishment. Enacted in July 1965 along with Medicare and Medicaid, the law is a key piece of policy that empowers the Administration for Community Living (ACL) to fund programs across the country that are dedicated to helping seniors stay in their communities.

The Older Americans Act (OAA), originally enacted in 1965, supports a
range of home and community-based services, such as meals-on-wheels and
other nutrition programs, in-home services, transportation, legal
services, elder abuse prevention and caregivers support. These programs
help seniors stay as independent as possible in their homes and
communities. In addition, OAA services help seniors avoid
hospitalization and nursing home care, and, as a result, save federal
and state funds that otherwise would be spent on such care.
The Older Americans Act (OAA) helps millions of American families each year through a variety of programs; however, the OAA has not been reauthorized by Congress since 2010. That means funding is not keeping pace and American families are paying the price. From elder abuse prevention to Long Term Care Ombudsman to meal programs and transportation, Older Americans Act programs are the lifelines for our relatives and neighbors. There’s simply no excuse for Congress to ignore the desperate need for adequate funding, as they have since 2010. It’s time to reauthorize the Older Americans Act.
Chances are if you, or anyone in your family, is 65 or older your life has been impacted by an Older Americans Act program. From Meals on Wheels to senior centers, prevention of physical and financial abuse, computer training to legal assistance, OAA programs touch the lives of millions of seniors and their families.
No amount of political magic can hide the fact that three years of sequester caps have had serious consequences for important seniors programs, including the Older Americans Act and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, along with service reductions at Social Security Administration field offices.
