The Democratic Platform released recently clearly shows that the differences between how the Democratic and Republican parties will approach the future of Social Security couldn’t be starker.

Guess what seniors? GOP Presidential Candidate John Kasich wants YOU to “get over it” when it comes to Social Security & Medicare cuts. What do you think?
To win back seniors in 2018 and beyond, Democrats must remind them that Republicans are an existential threat to our cherished retirement and health security programs. In other words, thanks to the GOP, the time for overconfidence in the inevitability of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is over.
Political insiders gave us a glimpse today into the GOP campaign playbook: Don’t tell voters your plans and then cut Social Security & Medicare after you’re elected.
Each of them following the same conservative talking points portraying Social Security as welfare, seniors as “greedy geezers” and demanding benefit cuts to pay for billionaire tax cuts they consider off-limits for reform.

National Committee President, House Dems Decry GOP Tax Plan’s “Dire” Impact on Seniors.
As Republicans remain indifferent – or in denial – about the impact of the Trump/GOP tax scam on older Americans, seniors’ defenders are sounding the alarm. National Committee president and CEO Max Richtman joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic representatives in front of the U.S. Capitol today to warn of the dangers the tax plan poses to seniors’ retirement and health security. Richtman called the tax bill a “con game that should be called the ‘Washington two-step.’”
Step one: cutting taxes for top-earning households and profitable corporations.
Step two: use the higher deficits the tax bill will create to cut critical programs, like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.”

- What’s more, the tax plan will increase the national debt and compel Republicans to cut seniors’ earned benefits more aggressively in the future – even though Social Security and Medicare Part A are self-financed and do not contribute to federal budget deficits.

The federal budget plan that the Senate passed last week is full of landmines for retirees. In keeping with long-term Republican proposals to privatize Medicare and Social Security and slash Medicaid, the budget template would hurt tens of millions of retirees.
The basic flaw of the GOP plan is that it will balloon the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion and not offset the budget hole by raising revenue or cutting major spending programs – other than social insurance…
…According to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), a social insurance advocacy group, the structure of the budget resolution will sacrifice retiree benefits to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.

Here is where we stand on the GOP Budget:
- FY 2018 House Budget Resolution and Its Effect on Seniors.
- This budget proposes drastic cuts in federal spending for programs of importance to most low- and middle-income Americans while proposing tax breaks to benefit the very wealthy and large profitable corporations.
- Letter Opposing the Senate Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution.
- The committee-passed budget resolution would allow the Senate Finance Committee to slash programs critical to older Americans and people with disabilities – all to pay for massive tax cuts for the very wealthy and profitable corporations.
Dr. Ben Carson claims he’s not like the other GOP Presidential candidates. Problem is, his privatization schemes for Medicare and Medicaid are just more of the same GOP strategy to privatize and dismantle both programs
Now that America’s Presidential Debates are designed as entertainment television (as described here by CNN Moderator Jake Tapper)
and not an actual debate of the issues voters need to hear about before
choosing our next President…it’s probably no surprise that Social
Security & Medicare just aren’t considered sexy enough for any
serious attention.

GOP Tax Cuts Could Cost Seniors in the Long Run
- The nonprofit Tax Policy Center estimates that the GOP tax plan will reduce federal revenues by a net $2.4 trillion in the next 10 years. As the deficit grows, Congress will look to cut spending. Republicans have already called for deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and would no doubt come after those programs looking for massive savings.
- Seniors’ earned benefits could be used as piggy banks to pay for reckless tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthy.
