On October 20, 1995, the Space Shuttle Columbia roars off the launch pad at Cape Canaveral, heading to orbit for a mission that lasted 15 days, 21 hours, 53 minutes, 16 seconds. (NASA)
@nasa’s first Space Shuttle, Columbia and its crew of Commander Rick Husband, Pilot Willie McCool, Payload Commander Michael Anderson, Mission Specialists Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Payload Specialist Ilan Ramon were lost on February 1, 2003 when the spacecraft broke up on reentry during mission STS-107.
I can remember exactly what I was doing when this happened. The friends I was traveling with spent half the day on the phone with family that worked at the space center trying to get updates.

April 14, 1981 – The Space Shuttle Columbia lands at Edwards Air Force Base after completing its first orbital mission.
June 1, 2011 – Atop the gargantuan crawler-transporter, the Space Shuttle Atlantis makes its last rollout to the launch pad from the Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building, getting ready to fly the final mission of the space shuttle era.
