National Ice Cream Month ends today, so treat yourself to a delicious ice cream cone!
Ice cream is believed to have originated in China around 200 BC, with the invention of a rice and milk dish cooled with snow. For thousands of years, ice cream was a food only the very rich could afford, owing to the limitations of refrigeration and produce.
With the industrial age and advancements in refrigeration, ice cream became popular among the public at large at the turn of the 19th century. Urban legend states that the first ice cream cone ever sold was at the St. Louis World’s Fair in 1904. According to the myth, an ice cream vendor ran out of tubs from which to sell his ice cream, and noticing the waffle vendor beside him, decided to go into go into business with him, rolling up the waffles as cones and serving ice cream in them. The ensuing product was reported to be a triumph, and sales of the ice cream cone increased afterward.
