The GOP Budget – What would it do? Do you support it?
Read more about the GOP Budget here.
The federal budget plan that the Senate passed last week is full of landmines for retirees. In keeping with long-term Republican proposals to privatize Medicare and Social Security and slash Medicaid, the budget template would hurt tens of millions of retirees.
The basic flaw of the GOP plan is that it will balloon the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion and not offset the budget hole by raising revenue or cutting major spending programs – other than social insurance…
…According to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), a social insurance advocacy group, the structure of the budget resolution will sacrifice retiree benefits to pay for tax cuts for the wealthy.

Here is where we stand on the GOP Budget:
- FY 2018 House Budget Resolution and Its Effect on Seniors.
- This budget proposes drastic cuts in federal spending for programs of importance to most low- and middle-income Americans while proposing tax breaks to benefit the very wealthy and large profitable corporations.
- Letter Opposing the Senate Fiscal Year 2018 Budget Resolution.
- The committee-passed budget resolution would allow the Senate Finance Committee to slash programs critical to older Americans and people with disabilities – all to pay for massive tax cuts for the very wealthy and profitable corporations.
During the election, President Trump promised not to cut Medicare and Medicaid. He has broken that promise over and over with his endorsement of the GOP budget.
The National Committee strongly condemns other priorities of the House Republican budget resolution, as well.
The GOP budget resolution will mean:

The GOP budget and tax scheme, which leadership would like to pass before the holidays, has been rightly described as a “lump of coal for the middle class.” Yes, the tax plan is a big, fat Christmas gift to the wealthy, wrapped in a package of distortions. Despite President Trump’s disingenuous claim that it helps middle income earners, 80% of the tax savings goes to the wealthiest 1% of the American people. The rest get only a trickle of tax relief.

The House passed its 2018 budget resolution Thursday in a party-line vote that represents a step toward its goal of sending tax-reform legislation to President Trump.

Unjust GOP budget and tax plan cuts the safety net for seniors.
- The Republican budget would gouge $1 trillion from Medicaid, more than 60 percent of which pays for long-term care for seniors who have already impoverished themselves to qualify.
- The budget resolution imposes per capita caps or block grants on Medicaid that won’t grow with the needs of the population, including emergencies like hurricane recovery in Puerto Rico.
- Despite President Trump’s repeated promises not to touch Medicare, the GOP budget resolution calls for nearly $500 billion in Medicare cuts.
- The program would be privatized and the eligibility age raised from 65 to 67.

Senate Republicans may have moved on from trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act, but they’re still trying to cut Medicaid and Medicare funding by more than $1 trillion over the next decade, according to a new report prepared by the Senate Budget Committee minority staff led by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
The budget would cut $1 trillion from Medicaid and $473 billion from Medicare over the next decade, HuffPost reporter Jennifer Bendery tweeted Tuesday, which she said she confirmed with Democratic leadership. Politico published the report from budget committee minority staff Wednesday morning.
