After 42 years as an educator, Sam Burnett of Toledo keeps right on teaching. As a 10 year volunteer with the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, he’s showing seniors how and why their Social Security and Medicare benefits could be in jeopardy. That’s why the National Committee salutes Sam’s remarkable life of service as he is inducted into the Ohio Seniors Hall of Fame at the state capital in Columbus on May 24, 2013 at 1pm.

Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, received an endorsement from one of the country’s top senior citizen advocacy groups when he joined a dozen Central Oregon seniors for a Thursday discussion on Social Security and Medicare.
“When he came to see us in 2007, your senator made a pledge that he would not do anything that would undermine Social Security, and he has lived up to it,” said Max Richtman, president and CEO of the National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare.
Martha Marsh doesn’t follow politics or the machinations of the federal government very much but she knows one thing about Social Security.
“I’m living on it. I hope nothing happens to it,” Marsh said after finishing a lunch of pork loin and vegetables Tuesday at The Westerly Senior Citizens Center.
Building upon the growing public support for expanding Social Security, the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM) has launched the Boost Social Security Now education campaign to inform and mobilize our membership, grassroots networks and on-line communities to convince Congress that now is the time to boost benefits, not cut them.

Discussions about Social Security in politics and the media often focus on its role as a retirement program that provides vital protections to seniors. But the fact is that Social Security provides vital retirement, disability, and survivors’ insurance for all generations of Americans. In addition to significantly reducing senior poverty, Social Security is the nation’s largest children’s program and lifted 6.9 million Americans under age 65 out of poverty in 2014. And no generation has a greater stake in the fight to protect and expand Social Security benefits than today’s young workers, the millennial generation.

There is a misconception that Social Security is just for “old people” when in fact, about 4.4 million American children receive approximately $2.7 billion in Social Security benefits each month because at least one of their parents is disabled, retired or deceased.
The result is that the CPI-W doesn’t paint an accurate picture of the expenses individuals aged 65+ have-especially medical-related expenses. According to the National Committee to Protect Social Security and Medicare (NCPSSM), an advocacy group, seniors over age 65 spend twice as much as younger consumers on health care; for those 75 and older, the amount is almost triple. 5
According to the NCPSSM, “over the past eight years, the current COLA formula has led to average increases of just over 1%, with three of those years seeing no increase at all. The 2017 COLA was a mere 0.3%. For the average senior, this COLA provided an extra $4 per month, barely the average cost of one Lipitor pill, a prescription drug frequently prescribed to seniors.”

Social Security doesn’t drive the federal deficit and the Pennsylvania seniors who depend on it must not be used as bargaining chips to fix our nation’s fiscal problems. Social Security must be strengthened, not weakened. Shifting to chained CPI will make it harder for Pennsylvania seniors and veterans to pay their bills and have the dignity and financial independence they deserve.

Begich recently said he actually views expanding Social Security as good politics for Dems, arguing: “Are we for or against helping seniors have a dignified life in their later years? I’m for that.”
